I was introduced to the combination of earthy, vibrant matcha and sweet, juicy blueberries by my daughter. She makes this and other matcha drinks often and decided to show me how to make it. In this post, I want to share how to make blueberry matcha with you. You can prepare it in minutes and it’s really good!

What Is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder made from specially grown and processed tea leaves. It’s the cornerstone of Japanese tea culture, known for its vibrant green colour, smooth umami flavor, and incredible health benefits.
Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha is whisked into water and fully consumed, meaning you get all the nutrients, antioxidants, and caffeine contained in the tea leaf itself.
Matcha has a unique, slightly grassy taste with a creamy, umami depth that makes it perfect for all kinds of drinks/dishes like matcha lattes, ice cream, smoothies and of course this Blueberry Matcha Drink.
The Rise of Fruit Matcha Drinks
In the last decade, modern cafés and bubble tea shops in Japan, Korea, and beyond have begun blending matcha with fruit purées to balance its deep umami with natural sweetness and acidity.
Among the most popular combinations:
- Strawberry Matcha Latte – sweet and floral
- Mango Matcha Smoothie – tropical and creamy
- Yuzu Matcha Soda – citrusy and sparkling
- Blueberry Matcha Latte – earthy, tangy, and visually stunning
This Blueberry Matchastands out because of the blueberries’ natural tart-sweet flavour complements matcha’s slightly bitter flavour perfectly. The deep purple of the berries and bright green of the matcha also create a drink that is nice to look at. Don’t you think?

- Step 1: Place the blueberries, 240ml (1 cup) water and the honey in a saucepan.

- Step 2: Bring it all to a simmer over a medium-high heat and then simmer gently, stirring occasionally and smashing the blueberries with your spoon or potato masher as you do for about 15 minutes.

- Step 3: Your syrup is ready when the blueberries have turned to much and it has thickened slightly. Set aside to cool. Once cooled, you can leave it as it is, like I do or strain it so that there are no lumps. Do whichever you prefer and set aside.

- Step 4: Sift the matcha powder into a bowl.

- Step 5: Add 2 tablespoons of hot water and whisk until smooth with no clumps.

- Step 6: Then pour in the remaining water.

- Step 7: To finish, fill a tall glass with ice cubes and then pour the syrup over the ice.

- Step 8: Add the milk to the glass. you will begin to see the layers, one of the reasons this blueberry match drink is so popular.

- Step 9: Then pour the prepared matcha over the top to serve.

What do you serve with blueberry matcha?
You don't need to serve anything with blueberry matcha or any matcha drink. These popular green tea drinks are meant to be enjoyed on their own
That said, the origin of blueberry matcha is Japan. You might like to serve it at your next Japanese feast for friends. Here are a few dishes you probably know and should definitely try:
Mains:
Katsu Chicken Curry is known and loved worldwide. It's mildly sweet, not at all spicy and that curry sauce tastes amazing over the top of the breaded, fried chicken!
Japanese Chicken Curry: One of the most popular homestyle dishes in Japan, this mild curry is perfect for kids and those who don't like spicy curries.
Japanese Beef Curry: Similar to the above but with beef and a few other tweaks.
Curry Doria: This is a Western inspired dish similar to biryani. It was originally a seafood dish but is now made with chicken and other meats.
Tonkotsu Ramen: Who doesn't love ramen? Tonkotsu ramen is the king of them all!
By the way, this blueberry matcha is perfect with a snack or light lunch of katsu sando and Japanese coleslaw. That is a winning team of deliciousness!
Storage and Make-Ahead Tips
You can easily prepare the different components for blueberry matcha ahead of time for quick assembly:
Blueberry Syrup:
- Store in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 7 days.
- Freeze in small portions (ice cube trays work great) for up to 3 months.
Whisked Matcha:
- Best enjoyed fresh, but can be stored in a sealed jar in the fridge for 1 day. Shake or whisk again before using.
Assembled Drink:
This drink is best enjoyed immediately after assembly for the freshest flavour and best texture.
Top Tip
Use Good Quality Matcha: The better the matcha, the brighter the colour and smoother the taste. Look for ceremonial grade for best flavour.
More helpful tips. Don't miss these!
- Mind the temperature.
Never use boiling water — it scorches the matcha and makes it bitter. Around 80°C (175°F) is ideal. - Sweeten to taste.
Blueberries vary in sweetness, so adjust honey based on your berries and personal preference. - Layer slowly.
To get that delicious layered look, pour the matcha gently over the back of a spoon. - Mix just before drinking.
Stir lightly before sipping so the flavours combine but still maintain visual appeal. - Experiment with milk.
Each milk type adds a different texture:- Oat milk = creamy and slightly sweet
- Almond milk = light and nutty
- Whole milk = rich and indulgent
- Chill everything.
For iced drinks, make sure both the milk and matcha are chilled before layering. This helps maintain clean separation.

Blueberry Matcha

Ingredients
- 1 cup fresh blueberries
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp matcha powder (more or less to taste)
- 240ml (1 cup) water
- 480ml (2 cups) milk
- 120ml water
Instructions
- Place the blueberries, 240ml (1 cup) water and the honey in a saucepan.
- Bring it all to a simmer over a medium-high heat and then simmer gently, stirring occasionally and smashing the blueberries with your spoon as you do for about 15 minutes. Your syrup is ready when the blueberries have turned to much and it has thickened slightly. Set aside to cool.
- Once cooled, you can leave it as it is, like I do or strain it so that there are no lumps. Do whichever you prefer and set aside.
- To make the matcha, soak your chasen (matcha whisk) in some water for 1 minute to make it flexable when whisking your matcha. You can of course use another type of whisk but a chasen makes it easier and the method more authentic.
- Sift the matcha powder into a bowl. Add 2 tablespoons of hot water and whisk until smooth with no clumps. Then pour in the remaining water.
- To finish, fill a tall glass with ice cubes and then pour the syrup over the ice. Top that with the milk and then pour the prepared matcha over the top to serve.
